“Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?” A court witness must answer this question with “I do.” But the testimony of a witness cannot be weighed apart from the integrity of a witness. No one puts a known liar on the witness stand.
Throughout His earthly life Jesus revealed the Father (John 17:26). In the presence of many witnesses, His words and actions testified to the love and mercy of an Almighty God; a God who so loves people “that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Jesus’ life proved that His testimony about God was true.
For just as Jesus testifies that God is the giver of eternal life, God testifies that Jesus is the way to eternal life.
And now it is the Father who testifies on behalf of the Son. For just as Jesus testifies that God is the giver of eternal life, God testifies that Jesus is the way to eternal life. He did this when He raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him at His right hand (Ephesians 1:19-20). Jesus’ victory over death is our victory over death if we put our trust in Him (Romans 5:15-17).
God’s testimony cannot be successfully discredited. Satan, people, or our own thoughts will dispute God’s testimony that Jesus is the way to eternal life. But the Holy Spirit is now in the world helping those who are far from God understand that Jesus is the way to Him. And for those who already trust in Jesus, God’s testimony rests secure in a place from which it cannot be taken, our own hearts (1 John 5:10).
Reflect:
- Do you have a relationship with Jesus but still wrestle with doubts about your status with God? In what way?
- Who is one person you can talk to about your doubts today?
- Do you feel the Holy Spirit calling you to Jesus? If you’ve never started a relationship with Jesus, you can do it today.
